10 miles in the non-compete. You can ask your manager for a copy. If you *are* going to be grooming then it is a problem. I had a groomer leave to be a vet tech at a place that offers grooming. She was not grooming so it was not a problem

New stores are tricky. Call and ask the manager. There may have been an internal candidate front another store that the dm had planned for the spot, they may have pushed out the opening day....opening a new store can be quite ambiguous. Dont stress out with guessing games. Call and ask.

PetSmart Forum - Lead positions a "trial" and they're evaluating whether or not to keep them?: Not true. PetSmart makes more money when...
Not true. PetSmart makes more money when they have great leadera in the right positions. Hindsight is sometimes 20-20. There were times when I thought that i was ready for the next position and probably wasn't. Lucky I had great managers who held me back and worked with me on my opportunities. This has helped me to avoid some of the pitfalls that people moved forward too quickly ran into. (And often allowed me to move more quickly into higher positions
Here are some suggestions. Id reccommend taking them and running with them if you want to move up
1. Learn to work in other areas of the store. Work hard and have a great attitude about it when you do. Also ask lota of questions so you do things right.. It is easy to be short-sited in petcare. Volunteer for some overnighys and early mornings.. the hustle when you are doing it. Be the first to the register when backup is needed . Ask to cross-train in bathing so you can help them out when need be. Save lives by learning more about and selling train I ng. Help the adoption groups. Use CARE with all associates and pwt parents
2. Talk to your manager about setting you up with an Individual development plan...and montly one on ones.
3. Own your own growth. Learn and live by the success factors (if you dont know them...ask a manager for a copy..infact ask for the hourly manager success factores worksheet if you want to be a leader.) Know and relate things back to the critical and practice the COACH model (you should ask about these too if you dont know them
4. Ask managersand peers (especially those you are uncofortable with!) For direct feedback about what you can do differently. Most impotiantly dont get defensice and be receptive when they give it.
5. Read leadership books. My favorites are Fish! And Whale Done!
Own.Lead.Inspire :D

Emoly. Sound like things are a little different in Canada. Pay in the US varies a good bit depending on the average salaries in a location. Acadmy is only 1 month here and then students intern with a salon manager for 2 more.

PetSmart Forum - What's the company culture at PetSmart?: I am 20 year old and I applied to work a...
I am 20 year old and I applied to work at Petsmart for a bather position. My dreams is to become a pet groomer in the futher. I love animals and I want to work with them, well, I am overweight and I concern if they will hire me even if I am overweight. I went to the interview last Friday, the manager was friendly, however, the interview was very short only 15 minutes, she asked me couple questions and i answer the best i can, i was looking professional with a professional suit, my big concern is that she dont offer me a second interview (a friend of mine told me if they will hire you they offer you a second interview on the first day when you have you interview)but she dont offer any second interview to me, i asked her the time frame for her decision and she told me that will take around a week so, also when i left i shake her hand and i say that i hope i can hear from her soon and she only answer ok, she dont say that she will call me back, she just say ok. I weight around 200 pound but my weight is nothing to do with my job performance, i am a volunteer at the shelter and i handle different kind of dogs and i have little experience with bath dogs because i have 4 dogs of my own, i love animals and that is my dreams, i feel so sad if they dont hire me because I am overweight, i really dont want to lose the opportunity to work there. Petsmart is the great company and i know i can have a bright future there, what can i do to follow up with her? did i need to call her and find out if she ready make her decision? did i need to wait for the week? if the interview was on Friday and she dont call me yet (today is Wednesday) is because she dont give me the job right?. I am very concern, I really dont want to lose that great opportunity. This is my dreams. what should i do? please give me you advise. Thank you
Hi,
How successful is a career in Pet Grooming? Are there placement positions after the course is completed. Roughly, how long does it usually take for someone to develop a good career in this field? I'm been involved with animals for years and I'm going through a middle life career change @ this time. I don't want to invest time and money unless it offer me a future. Please advise...
It depends on your store manager, your salon manager (if you have one and you are lucky if you do). It depends on your co workers if they like you or not. My experience has been very very bad. I have only been there a little over a month, and i am constantly being told on. I am not trained. Every time I am trained, my trainer runs and tattles on me when I do something wrong. If you don't dry it right, or the dog slips out of the lead or runs out of the kennel etc.
I didn't realize that my fate depended on the opinions of my co workers. I hate that. I would never have started otherwise. I do not want my fave judged on some immature little hole running their mouth. Instead of telling on people, train them.
I also found out that even if you get your education elsewhere, and try to be a groomer, they still want you to go to school. The way people talk to you in the salon is crazy.
I have had 2 sit downs because of things happening. I didn't know it would be about this, otherwise i would never have done it. Be careful, make sure you have a good trainer, don't trust the people you work with. And above all else watch your back because no one is going to do it for you unless you are really really really lucky. Good luck

PetSmart Forum - Pet Trainer at Petsmart.: Hello everyone, I read through most of t...
Hello everyone, I read through most of the comments submitted and appreciate your honest thoughts on the Trainer job at PetSmart. It's interesting for me as I have been in the training field for 30+ years and am considering working as a trainer for PS, maybe becoming an area trainer, and climbing the corporate ladder. As a young trainer starting out I was fortunate to have been hired by big time training companies such as Guide Dogs for the Blind, Canine Companions for Independence, and others. I also ran my own training company for 28 years. Due to some personal issues I've had to work though, I closed shop a couple years ago, now it's time to get back to the important issue of helping people to have a positive life long relationship with their companion dogs. Regardless of the negative aspects of working for a corporate entity, you should have appreciation for the opportunity. As a young an upcoming trainer I too found myself being critical of "other" training programs and especially the large corporate infiltration of the training industry. This is America however, a profit driven society, and everyone is entitled to a piece of the pie, superstores included. In my humble opinion, I would suggest for any training associate departing the PS world to be grateful to the extent that you had the opportunity and take away the good (there must have been some),that you can apply to any future endeavor you may seek. Keep in mind there is room for improvement in every program, so do your best, the pups are counting on it. Good luck and best wishes to you all!

Hello,
We have a new petsmart opening here (Ashland,ky) soon (no open date eat) anyway! They have positions for pet stylist listed on their website. I applied. It doesn't really list any requirements like previous grooming experience, ect. So I was wondering, ate you required to work so log as a bather before you can go to the grooming academy? Or? How does this work. I'd love to be a groomer.

PetSmart Forum - Disappointed In Petsmart Grooming: I take my dog to the Petsmart in Shelby ...
I take my dog to the Petsmart in Shelby Township, MI. I am severely livid in the way my dog was taken care of. I was told my dog had fleas when she doesn't go outside or interact with other dogs. When taking her there shes petrified to go in. She never used to be this way. She used to love it and the people who groomed her. She had what looks like, and I've had more then one person check this out, RAZOR BURNS ON HER BACK! An she a sore on her neck from this. She didn't tell me the amount of fleas on my dog. They don't grind her nails properly like requested and my dog shakes and doesn't act right for the next few days. I spoke to the manger and she didn't sound like she had a clue. I'm livid. As the owner I could have and would have saw the fleas and stuff on my own dog. Will never go back to this one again. Very ignorant and rude people and service is horrible. Very expensive

PetSmart Forum - Bathers/Groomers don't know their own jobs!: I worked for Petsmart for 4 years. I was...
I worked for Petsmart for 4 years. I was a pet stylist assistant. It was a thankless job, based only on productivity and the amount of extra sales you did. I am not a sales person, I am an animal lover. It wasn't about the money for me. I wanted to take time on my dogs, let them get to know me. Pressure was put on all of the employees to produce as much as possible in as little time as possible. This led to stress on the animals, and accidental clipper burns, brush burns, and cuts. Anytime you put humans or animals under stress you are going to have problems.
I was told that it was such an honor to work at Petsmart. That at home grooming and private grooming businesses were to be feared. Of course the more I learned the less I started to believe that nonsense.
I quit Petsmart and started working at a privately owned business. Best decision of my life. No we didn't get crummy Petsmart bennies, but I also didn't have to worry about getting fired or being hurt on the job. All of the groomers I knew at Petsmart left after I did to start their own grooming business, they left the bennies behind, THAT is how bad it was. Plus the turnover rate is so high, you don't have your benefits for long.
This is just how I feel. I've been running my own grooming business for years now, and I am insured. I learned a lot about safety from Petsmart and I have applied it to my own business, AND made it better. Better shampoo, better equiptment etc... Petsmart when I worked there had awesome groomers, but awesome groomers don't stay there. If they want to live up to their full potential they just have to get out of there.

My store also takes the coupons off of the commission for trainers and the managers do the commission sheets. I do them occasionally but am told to take coupons off and do an average price to account for the coupons. Didn't know that they get reimbursed for them. That really annoys me. Stopped using them so I don't lose money but as far as I am concerned, they have ripped me off for the ones I used in the past. Was going to be nice and give a months notice but just dropped to 2 weeks after this.

PetSmart Forum - Don't work for PetSmart: I'll chime in and say my store is pretty...
I'll chime in and say my store is pretty cool. I work in grooming. Corp has a lot of silly rules and regulations probably drawn up by somebody that has never worked in-store but I don't have any complaints about how the store is managed and everyone is pretty nice. Sales aren't as important as taking care of the dogs/cats that come into the salon. Nobody's pushing groomers to do x amount of dogs per hour. Some can do more than others and that's fine, they get more slots. I keep reading and hearing that salon workers in other stores are pressed to do too many dogs and I'm glad that's not the case here.
When I was hired I had two interviews. Don't let the posts here discourage you from applying at PS. You should get a good feel in the interview if your management really cares about the animals or all they're seeing is dollar signs.

I work for Petsmart, and it's just soo much drama in the grooming area. This goes beyond girl drama. Im debating upon leaving, each day is just filled with evil, vindictive intentions from other people. I was told there was no 2 year contract. I bought my own grooming stuff. What should I do, I love the working with the animals but the people cruel to me behind my back, by booking all bad dogs and to my Gm. Btw I kn8w petsmart is a great coming.
